What is Radical? (Part 1)

So I want to begin a discussion on what is radical living. However, the word radical is not in the Bible and I think we must deal with the reality of this first and foremost. There are many synonyms for radical that I think might give insight to what we mean by radical but for the sake of discussion I will merely list a few and then tell you what I believe is the root of this radical life. Some synonyms are…basal, basic, foundational, fundamental, original, primary, underlying, drastic, extreme, fundamental, heretical, heterodox, original, primitive, revolutionary, thorough-going, unconventional, unorthodox, conservative, derivative, moderate, slight and trifling. However, words such as extreme, drastic, revolutionary are not words used in the Bible but at best are merely alluded to in notions of extreme love, faith, hope, care and ideologies compared to the context of Judaism and Roman ideals. So my argument is that it is virtually impossible to live a radical life in and of itself but that radical can only be the adjective describing something done radically. So what is it in light of scripture. Well, I dare not take the space to prove it now, time does not permit. But, at first glance, one might consider faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love. So in light of a Savior who dies on a cross and has the last words offered to our Father of “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” The question I pose is, What is radical love look like in the following arenas?

1. Christmas

2. Service

3. Discipleship

4. Work

5. Giving

6. Equality

7. Community

8. Other

    1. Christmas
Not worrying about what you want but more of looking at what you can give to others. Not necassairly gift wise, Christmas wasn’t about getting things, although that is when God gave us Jesus. We should be radical and spend this time meeting the needs of those that aren’t fortunate as us all the time. Spread the love of Jesus Christ with our brothers and sisters.

    2. Service
We should do service not for the fact of what we can get out of it but the fact that we are called to help and if we do we are showing the love of christ to people.

    3. Discipleship
Picking up the cross and just going with it. It is not always going to be easy and not always going to be what we want to do but for it to be radical we have to do it. I don’t think Jesus wanted to carrying that cross up the mountain, I doubt that the guy they pulled off the street to carry his cross for Jesus some of the way wanted to do it either but he did it.

    4. Work
Not doing it for us but for Jesus

    5. Giving
Not to give for we feel we are forced to but to give with a open heart because we understand what is happening when we give, we are being Jesus.

    6. Equality
It is hard at times but I believe what would be radical is when one realizes that we are no better or worse than anyone else. We are all created in God’s image and Christ died for all of us and God forgave all of us, even though we have different stories, struggles, backgrounds. In God’s eye’s we are still his children

    7. Community
Living in a relationship with everyone on how God would want us to be. Loving everyone, helping everyone, trusting everyone, Being transparent and will to pick a brother up when they fall and allowing to be picked up when we fall.

These are just my thoughts of when I think of these topics and what it means to be radical with them. I have actually been thinking about radical living a lot lately. It is something I am striving for, to live radically. For I think that if we can live more radical than we are one more step closer to being more like Christ.
